Despite advances in gender equality over the past years, there is still a paucity of women neurosurgeons not only in Germany but all around the world. A glass ceiling prevents women from entering leadership positions. As the Socialpillar, amongst many other problems and challenges in the field of neurosurgery, we declared gender equity our main topic. Our three-point plan includes (1) raising awareness for the gender gap, (2) collecting scientific data to quantify the problem and its underlying reasons, and (3) providing perspectives and guidance for a career in neurosurgery.
With the Alice Rosenstein Program, commemorating the first woman to ever perform modern neurosurgical procedures in the world, we are building a nationwide mentoring platform for female medical students pursuing a career in neurosurgery. The first group of mentees will enroll in the fall of 2021.
